Cardigan Bay, located in West Wales, is an inlet in the Irish Sea, which at its heart features the town of Cardigan, while Lampeter, New Quay, Devils Bridge, Tregaron, Fishguard, and Aberforth are also located in the county of Cardiganshire, and lie either along the coast, or further inland.
The bay has many nature reserves and special conservation areas, along with several main rivers sending water into the sea, including the River Teifi, River Aeron, and River Rheidol. Due to its mix of countryside and coastal locations, it is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers a wide range of activities for all ages. New Quay Harbour offers Dolphin Watching Boat Trips, while there are many locations along the bay where you can take part in Water Sports, Fishing and other outdoor activities like rock climbing. It’s also a good place to visit for walkers, as there are a selection of 4 ½ mile to 6 ½ mile circular routes that take in the Cardigan Coast, Saint Dogmaels, Cilgerran, and part of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.
The Cardigan Bay Coast is also home to many award winning sand or shingle beaches, offering sunbathing, sports, and swimming facilities for visitors. These include the beaches at Penbryn, New Quay Harbour, Borth, Llanrystud and Clarach.
Away from the coastline, the town of Cardigan has much to entertain its visitors from annual events to popular tourist attractions. Event highlights include a Walking Festival, and their River and Food Festival, which has everything from Power Boats to Children’s Activities and Local Food Showcases. There are also the tourist hotspots in the town, such as the Museum of Power, the Welsh Wildlife Centre and the Fforest Outdoor Activity Centre.
Elsewhere in Cardigan Bay, The Dyfed Shire Horse Farm, not only houses Shire Horses, but also pigs, Chickens, Llamas and Donkeys in a petting area, along with demo’s and other outdoor activities for the children. Other family friendly attractions include the West Wales Museum Of Childhood in Dyfed, and the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which runs from Devils Bridge to Aberystwyth. Add to the mix other attractions like the National Library of Wales, Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort, and the Magic Of Life Butterfly House, and you won’t be short of something to do on a trip to Cardigan Bay!
